AUTHORS INTERVIEW

In your book, you tell a true story about your life in Africa, is everything true?
Dawtrey: Yes.

What made you decide to go to Africa?
Dawtrey: A sense of adventure and a wish to impart our expertise in making a living from the land. Jo was a farmers daughter and we had worked as farm managers for 14 years in Norfolk.

Have you ever thought that it could meant for your family to start a difficult life?
Dawtrey: Yes but we were a strong family unit bonded by love.

What has been the most difficult situation you have faced in Africa?
Dawtrey: The Africanisation of schools such that we had to send our children to boarding schools.

How important is in your opinion writing in your life, is it just a one-off experience or do you want to carry on with it?
Dawtrey: I wish to continue writing and am frequently asked when is my next book coming out. I do get published regularly in magazines.

Who, in your opinion, could be more interested in your book?
Dawtrey: Especially people who have overseas experience and love adventuresome family life in stressful situations. It will appeal to readers in Australasia, South Africa, Canada and USA as well as UK. The many people who enjoy wildlife adventures.

What made you decide to write that book?
Dawtrey: So many people have implored me to ‘write it down’. I enjoy writing.

Have you published anything else, and are you planning to write any other book?
Dawtrey: Yes.

What do you do at the moment?
Dawtrey: Retired. Caring for the heroine of the book, my wife Jo, who has had a stroke.

Would you go back to Africa?
Dawtrey: Yes.

Is there anything else you want to add either to describe your book or just about yourself and your family?
Dawtrey: We have spent our lives creating opportunities for under privileged African people and in conservation of wildlife. My adult family are now all working in caring professions. There’s no doubt that ‘caring’ is contagious.
